The Western Han Dynasty established "Tai Xue", the highest seat of learning in ancient China, in Chang'an in 124 BC. It was the most formal higher education institute in China. As for the civil institutes, there was Shu Yuan or the college, which dates back to the Song Dynasty and existed till the establishment of modern higher education in China.
